There is much you can do regarding a computer's safety and the smooth running of the operating system, if you know how to take advantage of the Windows Task Manager. You can even remove malware or other harmful programs, manually, without the assistance of an antivirus application. Security Task Manager works on the same principle. Its main focus is to highlight processes and services which may harm your system. Additionally, it provides a large array of information that will help you decide which items to keep, remove or quarantine.

Security Task Manager is designed for a wide range of users. It works on various Windows platforms, from Win 2000 to Win 7. The low system requirements allow you to use the application even with older hardware. Installing the program is also a simple task, which does not involve complex settings.

Running processes are listed in a specific order, on the software's interface, according to their security ratings. You may include Windows processes, on the same list, just by clicking an option, located on the toolbar. Depending on their security ratings, some processes are color coded with different shades of red. An item which is more likely to cause harm is highlighted with a darker shade of red and it has a higher rating.

If you select a process, the software will display its properties, as well as other details, on the lower part of the window. Security Task Manager provides information about who certified the program, it tells you if it is capable of manipulating other applications and much more. Each bit of information is rated as safe or unsafe and you can find an overall rating, in the same area. The software will rate processes as "harmless", "mostly harmless", "potentially dangerous" and so on. If you are certain that a process is safe or not, you may click its rating, in the processes list, to select a rating or add your comments, on a separate window.

You can remove or quarantine a selected process with different options, located on the toolbar. A very useful feature is the possibility of performing a Google search with a single click. If you come across a process which is not familiar, you may select it and click the "Google it" button. This will launch your default web browser, with search results, for that particular process, on neuber.com, where you can find descriptions and ratings from other users.

Pros

Processes are highlighted according to their security ratings. This makes it possible to identify harmless or dangerous processes faster. The listed items are filtered, to exclude Windows processes, but you can view them by clicking a button. The software comes with an option for looking up individual processes, on neuber.com, so you can be sure if they are safe or not.

Cons

You can not associate a different web site with the "Google it" option. Security Task Manager gives you a clear picture on the security ratings of your processes. It lets you know which items are safe or dangerous and it provides the means to remove or quarantine them.
